According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 68 U.S. children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This category of disorder, defined by impairments in social communication and interaction and restricted/repetitive behaviors/interests, has received attention from researchers as they seek to understand the relationship between a cause and behavioral symptoms displayed. Some symptoms that occur in many individuals with ASD appear to have a close connection to hearing, including unresponsiveness to some auditory stimuli, hypersensitivity to certain noises, and difficulty understanding prosodic elements of speech. Accordingly, a significant amount of research has been devoted to understanding the relationship between audition and ASD.
