The RCRI and the newer ACS-NSQIP surgical risk calculator is more comprehensive and procedure specific which is most commonly used now a day to access risk. Once a determination is made that non cardiac surgery will be considered, the patient should be evaluated for the risk of a cardiovascular complication. At the time of the initial preoperative evaluation, the physician should inquire about symptoms such as angina, dyspnea, syncope, and palpitations as well as a history of heart disease including ischemic, valvular and a history of hypertension.
