Climate change impacts on coastal zone biodiversity

"Climate change, the change in the average condition of the atmosphere, land and water on planet earth is a continuous process that is in place since the origin of earth. It is measurable on seasonal, decadal, centennial or even longer geological time scales. Since the changes in the Physico-chemical conditions is directly linked with the functioning of ecosystems and sustainability of life thereon, highest importance is given to measure and predict climate change and its impact on ecosystems.

The direct as well indirect effects of climate change on biodiversity have been recognized since long. The Climate change aroused in recent years due to resources utilization, pollution and global warming had adversely affected the marine biodiversity, in some areas very severely, by way habitat loss, changes in ecosystem functioning, change in species composition and genetic diversity.

The biodiversity loss due to climate change in deed is proved to be more in coastal marine ecosystems. The present paper gives an account of the impact of climate change on coastal zone biodiversity in Indian East coast with special reference to Odisha State. Emphasis is given to elucidate the biodiversity loss scenario and steps initiated to mitigate the problem in some precious ecosystems of the Indian East coast Vis-a-vis Odisha coast.

The information incorporated in this review have been retrieved from the published papers, reports, media information and own experience of the authors within the ambit of their research works and collected from different stake holders through discussions."
