Mucoadhesive polymers are classified into two main groups, such as hydrophilic polymers and hydrogels. The hydrophilic polymers most commonly used in buccal dry or partially hydrated dosage forms include polyvinyl alcohol [PVA], sodium carboxy methylcellulose [NaCMC], hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose [HPMC], hydroxyl ethyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl cellulose [HPC]. Hydrogels include anionic polymers like carbopol, polyacrylates, cationic polymers like chitosan and non ionic polymers like eudragit analogues.
