Hyperuricaemia and Hypertension

Hypertension is a significant cardiovascular risk factor with multifactorial aetiology. The link between hypertension and hyperuricaemia has been noted for over a century however determining whether this link is causal and whether there is a role for management of hyperuriaemia in the context of hypertension has been more problematic.

Over the past two decades research in this area has dramatically increased with development of animal models of hyperuricaemia and use of large observational cohorts.

There is an emerging body of evidence that hyperuricaemia should be considered an independent risk factor for the development of essential hypertension and that further research into the management of hyperuricaemia is required.
