Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. HIV infects CD4-positive T lymphocytes and destroys the immune system by reducing the number of these lymphocytes. The resulting reduced immunity facilitates the occurrence of opportunistic infections, such as Pneumocystis pneumonia, cytomegalovirus retinitis, and toxoplasma encephalopathy.
