Quantification of Changes in Skeletal Muscle Amino Acid Kinetics in Adult Humans in Response to Exercise via Positron-emission Tomography with L-[methyl-11C] methionine.

Positron emission tomography (PET) and MRS have also been employed to assess skeletal muscle energetics, but to date, only one study has used imaging to characterize skeletal muscle amino acid transport and protein synthesis, a metabolic characteristic which is closely tied to skeletal muscle atrophy and to the anabolic response of the tissue to exercise and other interventions. In 1998, Fischman et al. published new technique for the measurement of muscle protein synthesis in using PET with L-[methyl-11C]methionine (11C-MET).
