Epstein -Barr virus In the Etiology of Leukemia

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow characterized by an abnormal increase of blood cells, usually leukocytes (white blood cells). Leukemia is a broad term covering a spectrum of diseases. In turn, it is part of, the even, broader group of diseases called hematological neoplasms. EBV is a herpesvirus that infects and establishes a persistent infection in humans. Following a primary infection in healthy individuals, EBV infects and immortalizes B lymphocytes, which is followed by a lifelong viral latency.
