Years ago, it was common practice for some companies to offer a product/service for sale but then to sell their customers something entirely different. For example some companies would advertise an electric sewing machine for £10. They would offer prospective customers a free home demonstration of a rebuilt ‘Singer’ or Jones’ pedal operated sewing machine which had been fitted with an electric motor. All for the princely sum of £10!
