Liposomal β-Glucan: Preparation, Characterization and Anticancer Activities

Glucans are structurally distinct polysaccharides consisting of D-glucose units linked by (1→3)-β and (1→6)-β glycosidic linkages. Glucans demonstrated to control colon cancer cell proliferation via direct interaction of the glucan with the colon cancer cells and their apoptosis induction. Glucan extracted from mushroom Agaricus blazei stimulated apoptosis or programmed cell death in human ovarian cancer HRA cells. β-glucans in particular those extracted from fungi or yeasts have shown anticarcinogenic effects both in vivo and in vitro.
