Robotic Tumor Tracking Techniques in Radiation Therapy

Using the traditional treatment techniques, radiation oncologists have to contend with variations in tumor position during the treatment by treating a margin of healthy tissue around the tumor. Significant tumor motion, which can be up to 5 cm, has been induced mostly by cardiac and respiratory motion. To accommodate this undesired movement and other errors; physicians incorporate a large margin around the tumor to delineate Planning Target Volume (PTV), so that the cancerous Clinical Target Volume (CTV) receives the prescribed radiation dose under any scenario during treatment session.
