Tissue morphogenesis

The development of successful bone implants rests on a full understanding of cell-adhesion mechanisms under physiologically relevant conditions. This bottom-up approach focuses on the ability of material properties to guide the initial adsorption of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and, subsequently, cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and tissue morphogenesis. The complex, intercalated pathways that are involved are still not completely understood, however the ECM is now recognized as a critical component in guiding complex cell-cell interactions in addition to being a structural scaffold.
