Atherosclerosis is a medical condition in which cholesterol and calcium accumulates in the blood vessels and in their wall. Atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is the leading cause of heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Accumulation of cholesterol and calcium is called Atherosclerotic plaque. This plaque causes obstruction of blood flow in the blood vessels especially in the large arteries near heart causing serious cardiovascular disorders such as stroke.
