There are more than 70 types of autoimmune diseases. Till now the cause of autoimmune disease is not well know. Autoimmune diseases can be categorized in to two types a) systemic autoimmune diseases b) localized autoimmune diseases.
Systemic autoimmune diseases affect multiple organs. Localized autoimmune diseases target one organ. Systemic lupus erythematosus comes under systemic autoimmune diseases.
Researchers found antibodies targeting the hostâs DNA in Systemic lupus erythematosus where many of these antibodies are toxic and have the ability to penetrate in to the living cells and nuclei. The lupus antibody, known as 3E10, is not only benign but has the capacity to penetrate both healthy and malignant cells and cell nuclei, Researchers though that 3E10 can be used as a vehicle for drug delivery. They further found that 3E10, when used alone, could kill cancer cells with DNA repair deficiencies such as those with mutations in the BRCA2 gene.
