Periodontal diseases are often called as gum diseases or gingivitis. The mildest form of periodontal disease is Gingivitis which is often reversible even with professional treatment. Smoking, aging, genetic predisposition are the factors that contribute gingivitis. Untreated gingivitis leads to periodontitis. Toxins produced by the bacteria irritate the gums which stimulate a chronic inflammatory response and there by the tissues and bone that support the teeth are destroyed.
