|Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication affecting Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. It is a consequence of abnormal glucose production and degradation in glucose homeostasis. Chronic hyperglycemia in T2DM leads to up to an increase in the neuronal glucose level which cannot be neutralized by anaerobic and glycolytic burst. Hyperglycemia leads to the formation of O2- superoxide. Targeting the oxidative stress using particular nutraceuticals with antioxidant properties can be a novel strategy in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Many other nutrients like resveratrol, lycopene, soy isoflavones with antioxidant properties have been shown to have a positive impact on the complications of T2DM.
