The psychodynamics of work, an approach developed by Christophe Dejours in the 1970s, provided the framework for this participatory, interpretative and comprehensive inquiry. The approach was deemed appropriate specifically because it allows for a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the organization of work and the mental health of workers. The core concepts of the approach are pleasure and suffering at work and defensive strategies that workers apply to alleviate the perception of the suffering they experience and so be able to keep on working. The interviews were conducted in groups and on a voluntary basis. The nursing administration, the nursesââ¬â¢ union, and the people in charge of introducing the changes made up the advisory committee, whose role it was to facilitate implementation of the study.
