Acute tubular necrosis is the most common cause of acute kidney injury in the renal category. Acute tubular necrosis is commonly defined as an abrupt decline in renal function, manifested by acute elevation in plasma blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. The tubule cell damage and cell death that characterize ATN usually result from an acute ischemic or toxic event. Laboratory evaluation confirms the diagnosis; ultrasonography of the kidneys and bladder with Doppler flow is essential. Serum creatinine is the current criterion standard for the diagnosis.
