The impact factor is the key tool for any journal. The impact factor of a journal is the number of times it is cited by an average article published in the magazine. Thus the impact factor of a journal in 2010 refers to the number of times articles published in that journal during the period 2008 and 2009 were cited in 2010. In short it is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period.
