Self-renewal and differential ability make stem cells as probable tools for regeneration, repair or replacement therapies in a diversity of disease conditions. Furthermore, due to its plasticity and tropism to gather in diverse lesions, stem cells can be used as a tool to carry therapeutic gene for repair or regeneration of affected tissues. Contingent of their sources, stem cells are broadly characterized into embryonic stem cells (ESCs) i.e. cells derived from the inner cell mass of the blastocyst, and adult stem cells i.e. cells isolated from the adult bone marrow, peripheral blood or from specific organs.
