Secondary metabolism is defined as the metabolism other than the primary breakdown of carbon sources for cellular buildup and energy production. However secondary metabolism may does produce or consume small or negligible amounts of energy. Basic starting material for secondary metabolism is the end product of primary metabolism like pyruvate, acetate, succinate, ethanol etc. Secondary metabolism may be for the purpose of protective or escaping unfavorable conditions or to pass over the stress or nutrient deficient conditions.
