The female athlete triad syndrome has been investigated in high school athletes. The syndrome was first described over 25 years ago and consists of low BMI and low body composition as a result of energy imbalance, menstrual irregularities and bone density abnormalities. The disordered eating and associated stress fractures bring this population of athletes to the attention of sports medicine physicians, orthopaedists and psychiatrists.
