Development of secondary sexual charecterstics of males in females is referred to as virilism. The symptoms of virilism may include: increased hair on body, increased facial hair, changes in voice, baldness as in males, enlarged clitoris. The major causes of virilism includes Polycystic ovary syndrome which usually leads to irregular periods, or infertility, increased ratio of lieutinizing hormone to follicle stimulating hormone, Idiopathic hirsutism, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia. There are different treatment methods for virilism.
Patients with mild symptoms can be treated by keeping them under observation, oral contraceptives may be given to woman who doesnt desire pregnancy by correcting hormonal imbalances in women, cosmetic treatments for removal of hair can be used, few people go for laser therapy and electrolysis longterm permanent evidence cannot be seen.
