Î±-tocopherol (Î±-T) out of the 8 major analogues of vitamin E has been a particular focus because of its strong antioxidant properties. Î±-T is enriched in the plasma of humans and higher animals 10-100-fold to an average of 23.2 Î¼M. In Vitamin E isomers, Î±-T is a fat-soluble vitamin, where as it phosphate form, Î±-tocopherol phosphate (Î±-TP) is naturally occurring water-soluble form. Î±-T has strong antioxidant activity, the chromanol OH group in Î±-TP is phosphorylated so that it has no antioxidant activity. Î±-TP acts as a detergent forming a barrier which might inhibit the transfer of free radicals from one polyunsaturated fatty acid. Î±-TP more efficiently modulated atherosclerotic and inflammatory events than Î±-T by reducing THP-1 cell proliferation and expression of the CD36 scavenger receptor. Î±-TP and Î±-T act as lipid mediators modulating signal transduction and gene expression.
