Aquaculture refers to the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments including ponds, rivers, lakes, and the ocean. It is also known as fish or shellfish farming. It is probably the fastest growing food-producing sector that now accounts for nearly 50 percent of the world's food fish.
