Gene expression

Gene expression is the process by which the genetic instructions the nucleotide sequence of a gene are used to direct protein synthesis and produce the structures of the cell. This is useful to perform essential functions as enzymes, hormones and receptors, for example genes that do not code for proteins such as ribosomal RNA or transfer RNA or transfer RNA code for functional RNA products. Genes that code for amino acid sequences are known as 'structural genes'.
