Metallic biomaterials

Metals have been used for a long time in numerous biomedical applications because of their excellent bulk properties: strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, it is becomingly increasingly clear that surface modifications are needed to further improve endpoints in metallic biomaterials for promoting biological activity, host tissue integration, and/or tissue regeneration. Thus, there is a growing amount of research and commercial interest for using surface modification for improving metallic biological activity.
