Andrology is a medical discipline dealing with men’s health, and particularly in problems connected with the urinary and genital systems (infertility, sexual dysfunction, inflammations, neoplasmata). Gynecologists, urologists, endocrinologists deal with andrologic problems. The so called “male factor” is the cause of pair infertility in up to half of cases. One of the main roles of the andrologist is evaluation of male fertility before initiating procedures of assisted reproduction (intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization). Andrologic examination begins with a thorough discussion of the doctor with the patient. Subsequently, the doctor examines the testes. Sometimes it is necessary to examine the patient per rectum to exclude some pathologies related to the prostate. The patient may be asked by the andrologist to perform semen examination, which is why, sexual abstinence should be preserved for at least 3 days prior to the visit.
