Root canals often have hard-to-reach areas that are practically inaccessible to current mechanical preparation technologies. The goal of cleaning and shaping may be easily and reproducibly achieved with rotary files as far a relatively straight and narrow root canals but not attainable in flat oval and curved canals. The new self-adjusting file (SAF) represents a totally different approach in endodontic file design and mode of operation that was specially designed to overcome this problem.
