The ASPB is a self-regulated organization, meaning its purpose is to protect the public by ensuring Alberta biologists are qualified to practice biology according to the law. Professional biologists are regulated members of the ASPB, and are subject to a code of ethics, continuing competency, and a process of discipline. The ASPB regulates the professional practice of biology in the fields of botany, zoology, biology and environmental microbiology, and all sub-disciplines’ below them. The ASPB is the only organization for Alberta biologists is registered under provincial legislation, and it achieved this status in 1991, after the approval of professionals Biologists settlement and Registration Act of Alberta professional and trade Associations. The ASPB demonstrated excellence in professional regulation. Members are approved and recognized by the Alberta public. The ASPB is the provincial regulatory agency responsible for protecting the public by establishing standards for the qualifications, conduct and pursuit skills for the practice of biology. Professional Biologist must continually assess the professional competence and maintain competence through continuing education, training and experience, lead the practice of biology in accordance with all applicable laws and established ASPB standards of practice, provide professional services on issues in which the candidate is qualified by training and / or professional experience and to identify the limitations of the data or concepts, conduct professional activities with respect for the health, safety of the public and the environment, accept full responsibility for the results and conclusions of all professional work and refuse to allow the candidate name associated with the work that has been modified so to imply conclusions quite different from those originally stated.
