The American Parkinson disease Association [APDA] was established with the twin purpose to Ease the Burden - find the Cure for Parkinson’s disease. Dur4ing its founding APDA has raised and endowed over $87 million to fund research, patient services and education, and increase public awareness. as the country's largest Parkinson's disease grassroots organization, APDA aims to Ease the Burden for the over a million Americans with Parkinson’s disease and their families through a nationwide network of Chapters, info and Referral (I&R) Centers, and support teams. APDA pursues its efforts to search out the Cure by funding Centers for Advanced research and awarding grants to fund the most promising research toward discovering the causes and cure for Parkinson’s disease. American Parkinson disease Association Since 1961 APDA has supported over $42 million to research and has been a funding partner in most of the key Parkinson’s disease scientific breakthroughs. The American Parkinson disease Association grants are awarded through a competitive application method and reviewed by APDA's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The SAB is composed of scientists with nationally recognized expertise in a variety of leading research areas inside the field of Parkinson’s disease. A rigorous review and evaluation method of the applications is conducted by the SAB when it meets annually to review the proposals. APDA maintains eight Centers for Advanced research and individual research grants and fellowships are awarded annually for promising research by veteran and young scientists. Eight Centers for Advanced research are situated in major educational and medical centers across the country supposed to strengthen and facilitate to integrate already existing investigative groups. These Centers receive funding to support massive research programs that include: research trainees; fellowship programs; early stage discovery programs and later stage clinical translation medicine. These Centers facilitate research that is at the forefront of investigation into the causes, treatments and finally the cures for Parkinson’s disease. Post-Doctoral fellowships are awarded to support post-doctoral scientists whose research holds promise to supply new insights into the etiology, pathophysiology and treatment of Parkinson’s disease. This is a fellowship of $35,000 for one year. Research grants are awarded to investigators affiliated with and performing Parkinson’s disease research at major academic institutions across the USA. This is a grant of $50,000 per annum for one year, renewable.
