AOASO was in the past built up amid the eighth International Congress on Obesity held in Paris, France on 31 August 1998. Six nations were the first signatories to the arrangement of AOASO, specifically Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Philippines. The Objectives of AOASO are to encourage universal association among researchers of the locale and advance cooperation especially in the advancement of exploration, training and activity programs, to give a stage to trade data and encounters in weight research and activity programs among the part nations, through occasional gatherings, national congresses and provincial congresses on heftiness, to go about as a contact between the part nations and the International Association on the Study on Obesity, International Obesity Task Force and also the significant United Nations Agencies, to create action viewed as supportive and proper in accomplishing the targets of AOASO. The present President of the Association is Mohd Ismail Noor and the Vice President is Woo Jeong Taek.
