Founded in 1967, the ASO has developed the UK’s foremost charitable organisation committed to the accepting, prevention and behaviour of obesity. The ASO aims to develop an understanding of obesity through the pursuit of excellence in research and education, the facilitation of contact between persons and organisations, and the advertising of action to avoid and delight obesity. The Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) is the UK's principal organisation dedicated to the thoughtful, prevention and management of obesity. The Association was the first such organisation international and began to chance regularly in the Royal Society of Medicine. The Association structured the inaugural International Congress on Obesity, held in London in 1974, and under the leadership of Alan Howard and George Bray, the Association was also the creation body of the highly esteemed International Journal of Obesity, first published in 1977. Since this time, European (EASO) and International (World Obesity Federation) Associations for the Education of Obesity have been originated and ASO is a member of both. Members of ASO benefit from automatic membership of EASO and WOF.
