The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) is an organization in the field of parenteral and enteral nutrition and promotes basic and clinical research, basic education and advanced organization of consensus statements about clinical care and monitoring the quality of care. In 1979, an informal meeting laid the foundations of ESPEN, deciding to create a multidisciplinary society dedicated to the study of metabolic problems associated with acute diseases and nutritional implications and management. ESPEN was formally established in 1980.Congress meetings are held each year in a different European city and to gather more than 3,000 participants from 82 different countries. A bimonthly journal called Clinical Nutrition, which goes along with supplements and clinical nutrition e-SPEN electronic journal are official publications of the company, published by Elsevier. European parenteral and enteral ESPEN National Societies support in the form of block elements, for example the British and the German French Austrian companies. Under the aegis of ESPEN, many ongoing projects are supported by its members, as nutrition Day, Home Artificial Nutrition and the fight against malnutrition. It aims to encourage and support research of the highest standard in clinical nutrition and metabolism, and provide its annual congress a forum for the presentation of this work, to promote the highest standards of practice of clinical nutrition by all the disciplines concerned with the nutritional and metabolic management of patients, to promote undergraduate and education and training of medical personnel, nursing, dietary and allied disciplines in the theory and practice of postgraduate clinical nutrition, to promote contact and collaboration with similar and related companies worldwide and to facilitate international cooperation in promoting the goals of the company.
