European Society For Surgical Research

The European Society for Surgical Research was founded on the 17th of February 1966 in the Faculty of Medicine of Nancy. The society was started as: ‘La Société Européenne de Chirurgie Expérimentale’. On May 16th 1974, at the General Assembly in Salzburg, it has been decided to change the name of The Society as 'European Society for Surgical Research' - ESSR. The society provides a multidisciplinary, multinational, and multilingual platform that is still of high and unbroken attraction to both young researchers and clinicians to present their recent scientific work. During early November 1966 an agreement with the British Surgical Research Society (SRS, now SARS or Society of Academic and Research Surgery) was established, so that the members of each society can submit papers for the meeting for the other society and that the members of both societies would be informed about the data of the scientific meetings of each society accordingly. In 1968 another agreement was made between the ESSR -ESES at that time, the SRS and the Society of University Surgeons (SUS) reached on the organization of tripartite meetings at regular intervals not more than 4 years. Primary objective of ESSR is to encourage the development and expansion of high quality basic and clinical surgical research activity and to promote education in surgical field. The quality issues are also of great importance for the competitiveness all over the world; that must promote and demonstrate them. Continuous advancement in surgical research is no longer the only answer to the challenges that we are facing in this present world which has become more complex and at high speed. The first joint gathering of ESES, SRS und SUS has taken place in July 1969, London and the second in 1973. Since 1994 the General Secretary as well as the President of SRS and SUS have been invited to the annual congress of the ESSR and they have been given the honor to chair to The Society's best session, the Walter-Brendel-Session.
