Ophthalmology Society of Ethiopia

The Ophthalmological Society of Ethiopia (OSE) is a professional association of ophthalmologists established in 1994. It is maintained and managed by an executive committee which consists of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, the immediate Past President and an elected member. The main headquarters is located the among the Ethiopian Medical Association (EMA) in front of the African Union, near Mexico. The OSE is one of themembers of the International Council of Ophthalmologists/ The International Federation of Ophthalmological Societies and associate member of The Ophthalmological Society of Eastern Africa .The OSE is represented in the executive committee of the National Committee for Prevention of Blindness as the Vice Chairman. OSE is also on the Board of Trustees of the Eye Bank of Ethiopia. The OSE aims to improve the quality of eye care in Ethiopia and eliminate avoidable blindness. This is done by enhancing ophthalmic service provision, by conducting outreach cataract campaigns, facilitating exchange of knowledge and experience, sponsoring members to attend national and international conferences, and funding research. The Society provides mobile surgical teams for the delivery of cataract surgical services in remote and underserved areas. The Society also conducts continued medical education programmes to its members to increase quality of service delivery and gives exposure to its members by sending them to international conferences. The OSE encourages members to write and present papers, attend conferences and CME (Continuing Medical Education) and undertake research. An Annual Scientific Conference during which a panel discussion is held, papers are presented, lectures are given by visiting faculty and business meeting attended (with election of a new EC every two years) is a tradition. Hands-on-training, short/long community courses, and CME are conducted when possible and when funds permit. OSE is supported by ORBIS-Ethiopia, CBM and FMoH.
