Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology

The Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology (IGA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is Northeast China’s comprehensive research and training base specialized in geography, agriculture, ecology, environment sciences and technology. Its key research areas include Agroecology, wetland ecology, remote sensing and GIS, environment science and regional development. The research provides solid scientific foundations for China’s national strategies in food security, ecological security and the program of “Revitalization of Northeast Old Industrial Base”. IGA was formed by merging the former Changchun Institute of Geography and the Heilongjiang Institute of Agricultural Modernization of CAS in 2002. IGA’s recent research focuses on: 1) New cropping techniques and development of key technology in cultivating major crops in Northeast China, 2) Carbon cycling in wetlands and its adaptation for combating global climate change, 3) Molecular techniques for the cultivation of soybeans, 4) Development of key technology for the improvement of Mollisols fertility, 5) Vegetation recovery for saline-sodic soils, and 6) Restoration and design of constructed wetlands. IGA has a total staff of 324, including one member of CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering), one National Outstanding Young Scientist, 18 scholars funded by “Hundred Talents Program” and 9 Senior International Scientist. IGA houses 3 CAS key laboratories, 2 research centers, 3 provincial key laboratories and 11 field stations. It has made remarkable achievements since its establishment. IGA’s scientists have won several first and second Prize of National Science and Technology Awards (airborne three-band microwave radiometer, management of low-wet farmland of Songnen-Sanjiang Plain and regional agriculture development, and recovery technologies of climax vegetation in severe saline-sodic affected soils), and published major papers in international top journals (Nature, Science, PNAS) about China’s low carbon city strategy, food security and molecular mechanism for photoperiod regulated flowering time and maturity in the soybean plant.
