Flanders Institute for Logistics / Vlaams Instituut voor de Logistiek

The Flanders Institute for Logistics (Dutch: Vlaams Instituut voor de Logistiek; VIL) is a Flemish non-profit organization. It was founded in 2003 by the Flemish government. The VIL supports and enhances the competitiveness of the logistics sector in Flanders and to act as single point of contact for logistics sector. It represents over 500 companies and cooperates with prominent strategic partners and that reason itself makes it best organization to take the lead in logistics. VIL has an impressive national and international network. Mission of VIL is to enhance the competitiveness of Flemish companies in the logistics sector by implementing sustainable and innovative concepts and technologies. It aims to enable Flanders to retain and strengthen its position as a top region for logistics in Europe.

The VIL has a Board of Directors who is responsible for focusing on real problems for which the sector requires short or long term solutions. Board include 5 logistics service providers, 4 shippers and 3 representatives appointed by the government. VLAIO, Flanders Investment and Trade and the Flemish Ministry of Mobility and Public Works are the observers. Another important board of organisation is advisory board. It is comprised of academics and industry representatives. To make sure VIL projects reach the demands and needs of logistics companies, advisory board evaluates the project proposals. Board of directors approve the projects only when they receive positive evaluation from the advisory board.

Themes of VIL are Digitalization, Flanders Gateways, Sustainability, Omni-Channel. The ambition of VIL in Digitalization is to transform logistics Flanders into a digital supply highway and to keep sustainability at the core of the organization. Organisation also strives to make Flanders gateways state-of-the-art nerve centres that make them the preferred hubs to and from Europe and the world. Through Omni-channel VIL is evolving towards a model where a consumer can pick and choose from a whole range of products via all channels and can have his purchase delivered or picked up the way and time that suits him best.
