The Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) is a private non-profit association R&D institute (12 R&D centres) founded in 1985. It has 300 PhDs and 800 researchers. It encourages and invests in scientific research, technological development, advanced training and consulting, transferring technologies and establishes new technology based companies. It acts as an interface between the academic world and world of industry and services of IT, Telecommunications and electronics. It is located in the campus of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (Portugal). Along with the coordination from INESC Porto, it invests in carrying out research in health, robotics, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, software, information system, photonics etc. The institution is led by eminent personals such as José Manuel Mendonça as the chairman, Manuel António Matos as the president of the scientific council and José Príncipe as the president of scientific advisory board who won the 2011 IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award. The R&D centres are as follows to name a few out of 12 R&D centres. • CPES – Centre for Power and Energy Systems works in generating and regulating electricity, harnessing and integration of dispersed renewable electricity sources. It develops collaboration with Portuguese markets, enhances training and increases diversity through courses and foreign institutions visits, Increases of exposure of results through participation in international conferences and publishing results in international standard journals. • CITE – Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship works by providing support to the researchers in projecting ideas, implementation of project frame work and developing business strategy. • C-BER - Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research is to promote research findings, encouraging innovative ideas, results publication in international journals and by attending international conferences through biomedical imaging, bio instrumentation and neuro engineering. • CESE – Centre for Enterprise Systems Engineering: The main is to conduct updated high quality research and encouraging the new ideas on how to utilize in high quality research. In totality INESC TEC mainly focuses in the development and establishment of new technology based industries by the utilization of modern science and technologies.
