Medical emergencies

As per available reports about 10 journals, 15 Conferences, 4 workshops are presently dedicated exclusively to Medical emergencies and about 1204 articles are being published on the current trends in Medical emergencies. In terms of research annually, USA, India, Japan, Brazil and Canada are some of the leading countries where maximum studies related to Medical emergencies are being carried out. The International Federation for Emergency Medicine (IFEM) has stated, ‘‘Society has a right to expect that at the completion of their undergraduate medical school training all physicians possess the basic knowledge of emergency care and the skills to manage common acute problems.’’10 Under-graduate EM rotations provide an ideal environment for med-ical students to develop into well-rounded, independent practitioners. This is even more important in the sub-Saharan African environment where they must learn to make time sen-sitive decisions for undifferentiated patients with limited infor-mation, investigations and diagnostic resources. Our survey demonstrated that these future medical practi-tioners of Botswana were able to learn EM in a challenging environment, enjoyed their EM experience and gained confi-dence in procedural, diagnostic and management skills. “Undergraduate emergency medicine in an African medical school – Experiences from Botswana”.
