Bath Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases

The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD), known locally as the Min, is a specialist hospital in the centre of Bath with an international reputation for research and expertise in rheumatology, chronic fatigue and pain management. We also provide diagnostic, endoscopy and clinical measurement services. The hospital was acquired by our local actue hospital the Royal United Hospital Bath in February 2015. They provide patient-centred services, where each patient has the best support for their care and rehabilitation, and work as partners with patients and their carers to support them in the management of their condition. With around 380 employees and 25 inpatient and day-case beds anyone is able to choose to come to our hospital for treatment regardless of where they live if clinical need suggests our services are the most appropriate. The RNHRD is committed to providing high quality services and to raising standards continuously and has developed a bespoke quality measurement system to improve the patient experience by monthly audit of various areas of patient safety (vital aspects of clinical safety). The outcomes provide assurance to the board on quality measures and identify any potential risks to patient safety. The board monitors progress against key national and local targets in monthly and quarterly board performance reports and ensures action is taken to continuously improve the quality of services provided by the trust. To improve the quality of services that the trust delivers, it is important to understand what patients think about their care and treatment. One way of doing this is to ask patients who have recently used the trust’s services to tell us about their experiences. Our trust consistently scores highly in national patient surveys, which cover areas relating to care and treatment, cleanliness, mixed-sex accommodation, waiting times, quality of food, complaints and overall experience. For further details of the survey results. Attracting the very best staff who want to deliver the optimum standard of care and build their knowledge, skills and reputation to the highest levels.RNHRD offer general and specialist services in a wide range of areas from rheumatology to chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome/ME. As a national hospital they accept patients from across the country.RNHRD services and treatment programmes provide a multidisciplinary, holistic, patient-centred approach. They believe this was key to achieving successful outcomes for their patients and makes for best clinical practice. RNHRD services are underpinned by research and education programmes, and employee training is a top priority. Research Research and development is an important part of our hospital’s work. It informs our treatment programmes and contributes to a better understanding of many conditions. In partnership with local universities in Bath and Bristol, as well as many other universities and NHS trusts, we ensure that this research is carried out to the highest standards.Research is undertaken in all our service areas, with approximately 30 projects being carried out at any one time. This rolling programme of research includes basic science studies, looking at blood and tissue cells to find the causes of disease and illness; multi-centre clinical trials, testing new treatments; and the development and assessment of new therapies.
