Bundesamt fur Umweltschutz

In 1971 the Federal Office for Environmental Protection BUS was founded. In 1989 it was renamed to the Federal Office for the Environment, Forest and Landscape (SAEFL) after the merger with the Federal Office for Forestry and Landscape Conservation (BFL). On 1 January 2006, the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN was created from the BUWAL and large parts of the Federal Office for Water and Geology BWG. The Federal Office for the Environment FOEN is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation. It is the environmental center of Switzerland and belongs to the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications DETEC. FOEN is the specialist for the environment. It is responsible for the sustainable use of natural resources as well as for the protection of humans from natural hazards and the protection of the environment against excessive stress. Based on the sustainability strategy of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications, FOEN has the following objectives: 1. Term conservation and sustainable use of natural resources (soil, water, forest, air, climate, biological and landscape diversity) and remedying existing impairments; 2. Protection of humans from excessive exposure (noise, noxious organisms and substances, non-ionizing radiation, waste, contaminated sites and accidents); 3. Protection of humans and significant material values against hydrological and geological hazards (flood, earthquake, avalanches, landslides, erosions and rockfall).
