The Centre for Metrology and Accreditation, MIKES, is the national metrology institute of Finland. MIKES performs research in metrology, i.e., in measurement science. MIKES’s customers include both Finnish and international companies as well as the public sector. Other national metrology institutes are for example PTB (Germany), NPL (UK), NMIJ (Japan), and NIST (USA).
MIKES operates under the administrative domain of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. MIKES’s strategic research areas are quantum metrology, spectroscopy, nano and micro metrology, environment, and energy. MIKES has an active role within the European Metrology Research Programme EMRP of EURAMET and in Finnish research projects. MIKES cooperates e.g. with European metrology institutes, with the scientific community in the Otaniemi area, and with organizations within the joint centre CEMIS in the Kajaani area: MIKES metrology focuses on the following research areas: energy: metrology for energy production and consumption, quantum metrology: research and development of quantum measurement standards to act as corner stones in the International System of Units, nano- and micrometrology: traceable measurement methods for nano- and micrometer scale measurements, spectroscopy: measurement methods and devices for industry, environmental analysis and for International System of Units, environment: new methods for traceable environmental measurements.
It offer metrology services for industry, companies, research institutes and universities. Reliable and accurate measurement results provided by MIKES increase the efficiency and competitiveness of industrial production, they enable public research institutes to deliver accurate results to administration and they improve transparency and comparability of research results. Solutions are tailored to the customers’ needs and our measurement services are performed quickly and cost-effectively. MIKES is a signatory to CIPM MRA (International Committee for Weights and Measures, Mutual Recognition Arrangement) and a member of EURAMET e.V. (European Association of National Metrology Institutes). Through international collaboration, MIKES is linked to the international measurement system and to the European and international metrology research community. MIKES takes actively part in the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP).
