Centro Nacional de Biotecnología

Biotechnology is the use of living systems, organisms or processes to develop or make products of interest to human purposes. The term includes a wide variety of sciences such as genetic engineering, genomics, proteomics, cell and tissue culture or bioinformatics. At the CNB we use all these tools to lead the biotechnology research in Spain. We work to unlock the secrets of living things and to apply our research results to the development of new, safer, more effective compounds and technologies that will allow us to improve health, agriculture, and environment.
The National Centre for Biotechnolgy (CNB) is a research centre that forms part of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), Spain’s most important public scientific institution. The CNB opened in 1992 to lead in developing modern biotechnology in Spain. The CNB is distinguished by its versatile interdisciplinary research that combines molecular biology methods with the latest technology in the fields of functional and structural biology.
We are a team of more than 600 professionals committed to research excellence. The CNB has been recognised by an international jury as one of the eight Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence in medicine and the life sciences. The Centre’s research activities in the areas of Virology, Microbiology, Plant Biology, Immunology, and Oncology are interconnected transversally by potent scientific infrastructures and interdisciplinary research in the areas of Structural and Functional Biology and, since 2009, Systems Biology.
The Centre’s organisational structure currently comprises six major research areas. Department of Macromolecular Structures, Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Department of Microbial Biotechnology, Department of Plant Molecular Genetics, Department of Immunology and Oncology, Systems Biology Programme.
One of the most important assets of the CNB is its platform of scientifictechnical services. They provide leading-edge technology in the fields of structural biology and image processing, cell biology, genetically modified mouse and plant models, genomics and proteomics, as well as bioinformatics and computational biology. The centre also stands out for large research installations, such as its animal facility, greenhouse and one of the few high-level biocontainment (BSL-3) laboratories currently operative in Spain.
There were upcoming events in 2017 March: An Extracellular Interactome Map of Leucine-rich Repeat Receptor Kinases. Adult heart turnover. Cellular and molecular characterization. Massive Apoptosis in Human and Chicken Cells Infected with Ibdv. Atomic perspectives on Phytochrome photoactivation and signalling. Unravelling the pleiotropic functions of the Arabidopsis FRUITFULL gene. Multiple roles of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Klebsiella pneumoniae y amigos: evolución en red de las enterobacterias multirresistentes.
The Research platforms are Instruct Image Processing Centre, The Human Proteome Organization, European Mouse Mutant Archive, Infrafrontier, Iberoamerican Society for Bioinformatics and Networks include: EuroMAbNet and EMBnet.
