The Institutes of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf The scientific branch of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf is comprised of eight institutes as well as two departments: Research Technology and Information Services and Computing. The members and guests of HZDR can rely upon the IT Infrastructure considered as highly available and innovative. This is based on a campus-wide data network. The core of the IT infrastructure consists in a high-performance data centre (picture 1,3: building 614, data center) accommodating the servers, data storages, the network equipment as well as the back-up and archiving facilities for logged data from the institutes. Supercomputers (e.g. linux cluster) are provided for scientific calculation and simulation tasks. Any other data derived from research works of the HZDR are filed, saved and archived over periods of time.
The communication network on the campus is connected at high band-width to the Gigabit-Wissenschaftsnetz of the DFN (German Research Network Association) and is protected by respective firewalls, anti-virus software and spam filters. The Services for the digital Provision of Information and the Support in the publication process are provided by the scientific library of the HZDR, which is part of the department. In the modern library building the Information media as well as comfortable desktops for staff and guests are available.
The Department of Research Technology develops and implements dedicated research equipment ranging from experiment equipment to the level of complex and large research facilities. Depending on the requirements, our work covers planning and design as well as project administration and may extend to manufacturing and system integration. The institutes of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf ask our department for support in a wide range of different technologies. Considerable activities comprise the design and manufacturing of mechanical components and on the other side the development of measurement devices and control systems up to the system level of automation technology.
Processes under extreme boundary conditions are characteristic for the complexity of this challenge, which becomes apparent in the engineering of large machines and extended research facilities. Combined with the diversity of technologies applied, the resulting complexity creates continuously new challenges for the Department of Research Technology. Promotion of young people Qualified education on a high level is important to us. In our department we offer opportunities to complete an apprenticeship in the technical occupations electronic technician, industrial mechanic and draftsman. Together with the BA Sachsen, we offer an education as engineer for information technology. Students are welcome to work on engineering topics within the context of their studies.
