Flemish Institute for Technological Research

Flemish Institute for Technological Research/ Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek (VITO) is a research centre; Flanders, Belgium performs contract research and develops products and processes in the fields of energy, environment and materials. It works for both the public and the private sector. Dirk Fransaer is director of the institute. Research agenda of VITO focuses on major societal challenges we are facing today like climate change, food security, resource scarcity, sustainable energy, ageing population. VITO initiate a social transition by combining sustainability and transition throughout its research programmes, and is committed to maximise the valorisation of VITO’s research results. As an independent and customer-oriented research organisation, VITO provides innovative technological solutions and offers scientifically based advice and support to encourage sustainable development and to reinforce the economic and social structures in Flanders.

Since 2006, VITO has had an Audit Committee with an internal audit function. The Audit Committee assists the Board of Directors in its supervisory function, especially in reviewing of the financial information, internal controls and risk management, the audit process.

VITO as a partner is finding its way to eco-efficiency. More and more companies are combining environmental profits with company profits by evaluating their product design, optimizing their processes, and re-using their waste products. VITO is an important research partner for local, Flemish, federal, and European governments. The VITO researchers and employees have established a great track record in the last 25 years that placed VITO top tenth position in the Belgian list of highest number of patents submitted. It acquired European research grants and in 2015 had an ever-mounting budget at its disposal, which resulted in a record number of 250 SCI-papers and 1902 research projects with companies and 77 SMEs in particular. VITO continues to support companies and federations by developing and transmitting knowledge, with special attention to SMEs. In 2016, VITO will celebrate its 25th birthday. VITO is doing better than ever and has a beautiful future ahead.
