Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies is the international research college of the University of Freiburg. As an integral part of the university, the Institute unites under its roof the humanities and social sciences, medicine, the natural and life sciences, and engineering. This offers leading academics as well as outstanding early-stage researchers from Freiburg and around the world the opportunity to concentrate exclusively on their research projects for a certain period of time. It is in this way that the Institute creates a unique space and atmosphere for research within the university, enriches the global network of Freiburg-based researchers, and enhances the international visibility of the research conducted at the University of Freiburg. Particular attention is paid to promoting promising young academics, creating ample opportunities for them to build international networks by engaging in inspirational discussions and collaborative research with the members of the Fellow community across disciplines and cultures.

The university invites renowned scholars from around the world to Freiburg, offering a setting in which they can dedicate themselves to an inspiring research project or publication of their choice. Here, they are provided with a stimulating working environment, comprehensive support for their project, quiet offices meeting their individual demands as well as access to extremely well-equipped labs. They already submitted a convincing application in the competition for the first round of the program from 2014 to 2018. As strong new institutes for advanced studies have been established in the meantime, it was by no means a foregone conclusion that FRIAS would be successful again: The success rate for applications to the COFUND program in the second round was hardly more than 20 percent .“The institute plays a key role in enhancing the University of Freiburg’s international visibility.

”International networking forms one of FRIASs central strategic goals. The Institute is involved in a number of different renowned international consortia, this also attaches particular importance to collaboration in the tri-border region of France, Germany and Switzerland. Academics from the universities of Strasbourg, Freiburg and Basel are already working together in numerous joint research projects, and FRIAS aims to continue intensifying these links.

Since its inauguration in 2008, more than 450 fellows have stayed at FRIAS. The Institute supports internationally outstanding researchers with academically excellent and innovative research projects through individual or group fellowships. FRIAS unites research in the humanities and social sciences, the natural and life sciences, engineering and medicine. Both the University of Freiburg and FRIAS take pride in a specific institutional culture that encourages and supports exchange and collaboration. It is the philosophy of FRIAS to support the career development of its fellows by integrating them into ambitious research communities here in Freiburg, as well as by supporting the international network of FRIAS fellows and alumni. From April 10-13, 2016, the Research Focus "Chemical Epigenetics" (which was then working as a project group at FRIAS) organised the "3rd Freiburg Epigenetic Spring Meeting", a joint symposium of the FRIAS project group and the SFB "Medical Epigenetics" of the University of Freiburg. Every second year, the meetings take place in Freiburg and alternately deal with Chemical and Medical Epigenetics.
