ASEBIO is the Spanish Association of Bio-enterprises, ASEBIO groups companies, associations, foundations, universities, technological and research centers that carry out their activities directly or indirectly in relation to biotechnology in Spain. ASEBIO has been acting since 1999 as a platform for meeting and promoting those organizations interested in the development of the national biotechnological scenario. To this end, it works closely with regional, national and European administrations as well as with all social organizations interested in the use of biotechnology to improve the quality of life, the environment and the generation of qualified employment.
The wide base of associates makes ASEBIO the most appropriate scenario to be able to fulfill the challenge of developing the Biotechnological sector and to take advantage of the opportunities of innovation presented by biotechnology as a vector of economic and social growth in Spain. ASEBIO belongs to and is supported by EUROPABIO, the European Federation of the Biotechnology Industry and is part of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE) and SEBBM (Spanish Society of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry). Some of the main results of ASEBIO since it began its activity in 1999: Recognition of biotechnology as a productive sector with its own entity and integration into the corporate confederations CEOE and EuropaBio.
Participation in the parliamentary activity and in the design of public instruments to support the sector, Interlocution with high positions of the administrations, European, state and regional, Contacts with embassies and diplomatic representations of more than 30 countries, Presence in the most prestigious international fairs, Participation in numerous studies, reports and doctoral theses on the sector, in collaboration with Universities, CSIC and other entities (ICEX, OECD, European Commission, etc.), 3,315 press impacts in 2014 and presence on social networks (Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn), Growing presence of news from the Spanish biotechnology sector in the media, Implementation of 4 work commissions, Organization of multiple meeting forums and analysis of the sector. ASEBIO partners can participate in BIOSPAIN under special conditions: BIOSPAIN is the most important conference and partnering event organized entirely by a biotechnology association in Europe and the third largest by number of companies and one-to-one meetings held. The last edition, BIOSPAIN held in Bilbao between 28 and 30 September 2016, attracted more than 700 entities, 28% from outside Spain from 29 countries, with more than 1,745 delegates. The main companies, institutions and centers of research in the Spanish biotechnology sector. ASEBIO participates in the project "Valorising Biorefinery By-Products" within the program Cooperation of the VII Framework Program. The objective of this project is the development of biotechnological methods for the conversion of biorefinery by-products into biological products of high added value. It has a duration of 4 years, starting in 2014.
The aim is to develop integrated biorefineries of closed cycle, which are sustainable and economically viable, based on the full use of biomass (zero waste) generating the maximum possible value from the available resources. To this end, biotechnological methods, treatments and recovery processes for the conversion and recovery of by-products from the biorefinery process, such as hemicellulose, lignin and glycerol, will be studied and tested, allowing their conversion to biological products with high added value, eliminating the associated problems. To the generation of waste thus improving the efficiency of the process. It has a duration of 4 years, starting in 2014.The consortium consists of 14 partners, including SMEs, research centers, universities and a large company, from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom and Austria.
