Heliopolis University was established by SEKEM initiative which works for sustainable development for people of Egypt, since 1977. Heliopolis University established in the year 2009 with the aim to pioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to the pupils and the Egyptian people to improve enhance standard of living by decreasing threats to the earth’s systems through industrialization and consumption. Heliopolis University remained for understanding sustainable development, economic solidarity, social responsibility, and environmental balance in Egypt and the world. From the onset, Heliopolis University developed a sustainable campus work through by increasing the usage of solar power, waste water treatment and recycling of waste management.
The degree programs offered at Heliopolis University address the concepts and theories of sustainable development through a multi-disciplinary holistic approach that combines teaching through learning, research, and practice. The unique Core Program further enriches the learning experience by focusing on sustainability and human development. All degree programs are certified by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and based on the credit hour system, compatible with the American and European credit transfer system (ECTS). HU has adopted the “Project Based Degree Program” concept, in which degree purely based on the crowning feature is the intertwining of theory with business needs. HU aims to develop socially who are able to face and overcome future challenges through innovation, collaboration and technology based methods. During the course of their studies, students will work on projects with partner organizations using the problem-solving approach. Thus, they acquire new skills through studying and applying new skills in a real-life environment. This also allows the students to focus on an area of their choice, keeping motivation high throughout their studies. In the long course, this will allow personal success to be meaningfully connected with business success.
Heliopolis University is actively associated with associated programs with leading international universities in the fields of renewable energy, water, mechatronics, biotechnology, pharmacy and medicine for several years through Heliopolis Academy. Heliopolis University Center of Research for Sustainable Development aims to prove Egypt’s capability to conduct, publish and distribute related social and scientific research in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, engineering, biodynamic agriculture, the arts and social sciences disciplines. Its interest driven through research was designed to meet the requirements of the community, the companies and the country alike and builds on national and international collaboration.
Prof. Dr Rasha El-Kholy has twenty years of experience working in the field of sustainable development, conventional/renewable resources management and environmental protection. El-Kholy has published several papers in international scientific journals and periodicals, in addition to some chapters in international books and many technical reports. She is an engaged with many international associations annealing scientific research to serve humanity’s well-being and protect the environment.
