Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research (HKIER)

Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research (HKIER) is an independent research branch of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, established in 1993 with support from KP Tin Foundation with donation of 5 million Hong Kong dollars as capital. Dr. Leslie NK Lo is the director of this institute and also comprises of two associate directors. Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research is set up with an objective of developing, supporting and coordinating long term multidisciplinary research programs. All these programs consist of many number of research projects that are conducted by the scholars of Chinese University of Hong Kong and other affiliated institutions. This institute also organized conferences like International Conference on Basic Education: Nurturing Teachers for Basic Education, International Conference on Special Education--Helping Students with Learning Difficulties: An International Perspective and Workshop on Sex Education in Secondary School.
Since its establishment, the Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research has set six research programmes and much number of projects. These programmes not only let us know the research efforts of local and overseas institutions but also provide the impetus for further exploration of ideas in related areas of inquiry. These research programmes aim to coordinate the efforts of scholars in Hong Kong and neighbouring Chinese societies inorder to produce high-quality studies that will contribute to the advancement of knowledge and integration of theories and practice in the field of Chinese education. The programme will also facilitate inter-institutional and international cooperation in pursuit of excellence in research, and establish a substantial Chinese education database. The professional development of the teachers in of main importance. But the development of teachers in Hong Kong is rarely seen. Through these programs, HKIER promotes the development of the teachers in Hong Kong. They have provided alternative avenues for practicing teachers and school administrators who wish to further their professional development.
Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research aims to create an environment such that there exists educational enquiry and free scholarly studies in Hong Kong, China and other Asia-Pacific region. It also binds the researchers together so that they can flourish and disseminate their ideas not only in Hong Kong but also in abroad. Its objectives are to conduct strategic research with strong policy implications for educational development in Hong Kong and China and to attract more external funding.
